Advocacy plays an important role in educating our legislatures; those who make laws that affect our work, our play, and our lives. As American citizens, we are lucky to be able to bring our point of view to the lawmaking table. Legislatures are elected by us and want to hear what we have to say. Without our votes and support, they will not be re-elected, so your opinion does matter.
I have heard some people say that they cannot advocate because of whom they work for. This is not true. Think of advocating as educating; you can educate your legislators on any topic, even if it will support what you do for a living. You don’t have to ask the legislator to vote a certain way, but you can give him/her more information that will assist him/her in making an educated choice. Write your legislators from home, with no affiliation to your business, as a concerned American citizen.
On this page are links to various websites which will assist you in writing letters directly to your legislator, determining who your legislators are, writing letters to the editor for major newspapers in Ohio, and learning about the law making process both in the federal and state governments. Advocacy doesn’t have to take a lot of time, but the outcome may last forever. As an American citizen, you have the power to make the outcome a positive one.
