Course Description:

Sleep has historically been viewed as a passive activity with little value, yet research in the last several decades has shown that sleep is a dynamic process vital to physical and mental health. Unfortunately, it is a secret weapon that is often overlooked. The purpose of this course is to educate attendees on sleep needs, the effects of chronic sleep deprivation, and how to better support healthy sleep.

Course Objectives:

At the conclusion of this workshop, attendees shall be able to:

1. Understand the sleep needs of children, adolescents, and adults and identify common barriers to sleep.

2. Recognize the myriad negative physical and psychological effects of chronic deficient sleep.

3. Identify ways to educate others on healthy sleep.

About the Presenter:

Stacy Simera, MSSA, LISW-S, serves as chair of the sleep committee for the Ohio Adolescent Health Partnership – the first state-wide public health collaborative in the nation to identify sleep as one of its core focus areas. Stacy also provides outpatient therapy at Kent Psychological Associates, facilitates psychoeducational programming for the Oak Clinic for Multiple Sclerosis, conducts trainings for the Ohio Child Welfare Training Program, writes continuing education home studies for Heisel & Associates, and volunteers for the national non-profit Start School Later as the Ohio Health Policy Director. Stacy has been interviewed by myriad media outlets and for US and Korean documentaries on teen sleep, and has presented at a variety of state and national conferences on the topic of adolescent sleep and school start times.
