Health Education in Ohio: Advocating for a Skills-Based Approach

This session will explore the role of health education, within school health and Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child initiatives in Ohio. Participants will analyze student and school health data to capture the current context, issues, and status of health education in Ohio. The session examines student health needs and experiences using the YRBS, OHYES, and Ohio Healthy Students Profile. The CDC School Health Profile Survey data and the Ohio Health Education & Physical Education Survey (Lorson et al, 2019; Raffle, Ware, Lorson, & Wainwright, 2019) provides an opportunity to analyze the issues connected to curriculum, professional development, the Ohio Whole Child Framework, and stakeholder support for health and physical education. The presentation will also highlight national, state, and local advocacy efforts to promote health, physical literacy, and the whole child. We will also discuss local advocacy activities that support quality health education and physical education as well as alignment with the Ohio Whole Child Framework.
There will be the option to attend this meeting in-person, or virtual.
The in-person option will include a carry-in lunch.
