Essential Roles of Health Education Specialists in the Public Health Workforce: Key Findings and Avenues for Advocacy
Presenter: M. Elaine Auld, MPH - Chief Executive Officer Emerita, Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE)
This two-part synchronous presentation will include a snapshot of the governmental health education workforce based on the 2021 PH WINS Survey findings, followed by principles of a 3-tiered strategy for advocating for health education related issues. In part one, data will be presented on health educators’ demographic and workplace characteristics, COVID-19 pandemic activities and beliefs, job satisfaction and engagement, training needs, awareness of public health and health equity concepts, and agreement with agency involvement in social determinants of health (SDOH) compared to other governmental disciplines. Additionally, analysis between those health educators with CHES(R) certification and those not certified will be presented, with implications for curricula, policy, research, and practice. In part two, the “good, better, best” approach will be introduced as a strategy to advocate for health education issues. Participants will work in breakout groups to develop 3-tiered, stepped strategies for addressing assigned problems/issues and share their recommendations with the overall group. A handout of recommended advocacy tools, readings, and resources will be provided.
This meeting will be virtual only! Members may attend a district "watch party" to network with colleagues in their region.

The virtual option will be through Teams
