Leadership Development Resources 

The following resources offer a variety of leadership development opportunities as well as general health education topics. Some are limited time opportunities and some are considered "on demand."  External links are not under the control of Ohio SOPHE and are subject to change without notice. We do our best to keep these links up to date, but cannot guarantee the links will work or always be up-to-date. Ohio SOPHE makes no endorsement of the materials available at the individual website links below.

    Region V Public Health Training Center (RVPHTC)

    This page has a full listing of their courses, which can be searched or filtered to better find the right training for your needs. Some are available for Continuing Education credit, which may include a charge. The primary types of CE offered are CHES and CNE. There are also courses with no fee. 

    The Region V Public Health Leadership Institute (RVPHLI) is an annual opportunity for professionals in public health and primary care to cultivate their capacity to influence change in their organizations and communities. This four-month virtual program is grounded in theory, coupled with practical examples and peer-to-peer learning and is designed for both emerging leaders and current leaders. Applications are due in the fall, with the program starting in January.

    Region 6 South Central Public Health Training Center

    This course provides an overview of the principles of finance, discussions regarding finance issues related to public health, and understanding of financial management of public health programs and activities. Module I focuses on basic concepts of budgeting in public health organizations. The second unit examines issues primarily related to managerial or cost accounting. and the use of financial data in administrative decision making. Module III focuses specifically on capital budgeting decisions. The final module examines the importance of integrating strategic and financial planning.

     Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE)

    National SOPHE has a website dedicated to professional development. eLearn at CORE is SOPHE's dedicated source for continuing education and skills in public health education and promotion. The CORE provides CHES/MCHES credits to those who are members and non-members of SOPHE. Members may be eligible for discounts. 

      Prevention Technology Transfer Center (PTTC)

      The PTTC develops and disseminates tools and strategies needed to improve the quality of substance abuse prevention efforts. The training center offers scheduled webinars and virtual trainings as well as periodic synchronous training opportunities. 

        NACCHO (National Association of County & City Health Officials)

        Management Essentials is a suite of courses designed to enhance the essential management skills of health department leaders. Management Essentials offers four courses focusing on successful people management, financial management, change management, and strategic planning. These courses include both virtual instructor-led live-learning and asynchronous eLearning formats. The eLearning courses are always available on demand on NACCHO U. Live instructor-led courses will be promoted when they are offered. 


        Note: Many local health departments have active memberships in NACCHO, which covers the Health Commissioner and staff.

          The Center for Clinical and Translational Science and Training (CCTST)

          Research Education for Action, Collaboration and Health (REACH) is a dynamic learning series that seeks to provide community members and organizations with the skills to use data to show the benefits of their programs for improving health, gain skills in developing partnerships and conducting research with individuals in academic settings (hospitals, universities), and spreading their programs or sharing their outcomes with funders and the community.  

          The program covers topics such as program evaluation, building and sustaining meaningful partnerships, grant-writing skills, and ethical considerations when conducting research (e.g. surveys) in the community. Participants will also gain hands-on experience with quality improvement methods, and user-centered design, while also learning how to access local and national data that supports their work and helps them to illustrate the need for their program and its potential impact. Applicants propose a health project and all community leaders who successfully complete REACH will receive a stipend to implement the project between for the year following the program. 


            Harvard Business School On-Line

            This on-line, self-paced 6-week course is designed to help you bring out the best in others by applying and adapting your leadership style and managing the conditions that drive team performance. Courses are scheduled and start periodically throughout the year. 

              CDC - Grants Management

              The Grants Management Academy provides training resources and guidance on how to apply for federal grants and navigate different grants management systems, laws, and regulations, and on the life cycle of grants. This page also spotlights the Federal Grants Management Training Series and several other resources available through CDC and partner agencies such as ASTHO, SAMHSA, and HRSA.

                Toastmasters International

                Toastmasters’ education programs are designed to help you fine-tune your public speaking, communication, and leadership skills through regular practice. In a safe and supportive club environment, you will learn at your own pace, utilizing a curriculum that has helped millions meet their goals. Toastmasters' Pathways learning experiences complement hands-on learning with structured personal and professional development training in over 300 practical skills, including Project Management, Online Meeting Facilitation, and Leadership Development.
